You may recognise Andrew from his second place on the podium in January at The Bend. He clocked up 774kms in the 24hr Challenge riding solo. What you might not know is that, apart from being an Ironman triathlete, Andrew used to be a professional footballer with a Premier League club in the UK!
Well, Andrew has signed up again for Revolve24 in March 2019. Let’s hear why.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge of Revolve24 in March. Last year was a great family adventure with my wife Kellie and our two kids providing support throughout the race.
“The best part of the race for me is from about 1am until sunrise. The still crisp air, clear sky and almost total silence in sections of the track are awesome.”
“I think there will be more competition this year after word has got out about the fun we all had in January. Understanding the race better after completing it in January I’m reviewing some strategies, training and setting targets already.”
I’ve raced Ironman triathlons and have been close to qualifying for the World Championships in Kona. Revolve24 is a different physical and mental effort. Obviously, it is much longer but it is essential to be disciplined in how you pace your effort. When the sunrises at 6am you’ve been racing for 15hrs and there is still 9 hours to go!”
And then there is Andrew’s fascinating footballing career. He retired from a notable 9-year professional soccer career in 2004 that took him to the English Premier League, National Soccer League and the Scottish Premier League.
“I played football for 9 years, 80 odd first team games at four clubs.”
“I was 18 when I started at QPR in 1995/96. We were in the Premier League and got relegated that year. I was in the squad but didn’t play. I played in the old First division with them until I got sold to West Bromwich Albion in 1997 for GBP400,000.”
“I then went on a free transfer to Notts County in 1999 and after having 2 years in Sydney with Northern Spirit in the old National Soccer League, I went back, to Scotland, in 2003 to play for Dunfermline.”
Clearly an all-round athlete Andrew says all that he has to do for next March is “to lose weight and get fit again!”
