In its inaugural event in Australia, Revolve24 sure made a lasting impression on the team from SA Motorcycles. Held at The Bend Motorsport Park over the weekend of 13th-14th January, what began as a fun event for us to participate in, quickly turned in to a huge overall win for the team!
With SA Motorcycles having three stores and our own motorcycle race team, we have built up a strong name for ourselves in the motorcycle industry; now it was time to take on the cycling world.
In tow we had SA Motorcycles founder and owner, Evan Byles; SA Motorcycles Tailem Bend Branch Manager, Kirsty Byles; Tandem Pilot for the blind, Lachlan Glasspool; Paralympian, Darren Hicks; SASI Para-Cycling Head Coach, Loz Shaw; and SA Motorcycles staff and sponsored riders Sean Curtis, Travis Chamings and Joe Fitton. All members of the SA Motorcycles team were staff and friends of the shop and included an excellent mix of both amateur and professional cyclists. Along for the ride, we also had Cathy Byles as our right-hand woman in the pits, helping us every step of the way.
The team was driven by Kirsty Byles and her love of Tailem Bend. As an active member of the community, Kirsty endeavours to be involved in as much to do with both the town and The Bend Motorsport Park as she possibly can. This was the perfect opportunity to gather her friends and family and compete in something challenging and fun, all whilst giving back to the community that is near and dear to her.
The SA Motorcycles team finished first overall for the most laps, with a total of 241 laps covering 821.8km. The average lap time for the team was 5.56 minutes, making the overall average speed 34.4km/hr. Lachlan completed the fastest lap of the entire race at 4.20 minutes. This amazing effort was in the 235th lap of the race! We also achieved first overall for a group of 8.
Going in to the race, the team never thought that we would be in for a chance to win the 24-hour race outright; that wasn’t part of the original game plan. Once we hit the 5th lap and got to the front of the pack, we thought “we could be in with a chance here!” This then changed the whole dynamic of the race and we were determined to ensure that we kept that number one spot. We worked like a well-oiled machine, everyone knew their place and the next rider was always ready for their turn. Every member of the SA Motorcycles team had some form of racing background whether it be road, cycling or motocross. We were all born with a competitive gene, so once we got a taste of the top we weren’t going to back down. This organisation and knowledge of racing is ultimately what led to our success.
Although we were on our way to a victory, the road to the top was not so easy. The windy weather made it difficult to stay on track and this then caused the dust! Even though the conditions were not perfect, the team fought the dust and wind and won. No one was going to give up the opportunity to ride on a brand-new race track. The weather calmed down around 8:00pm and then it was smooth sailing for the SA Motorcycles team.
The team at SA Motorcycles would like to thank The Bike Station at Hove, Loz Shaw and Pirelli tyres, The Bend Motorsport Park for their world-class venue and all of the organisers and officials for running a thoroughly enjoyable event.Back to R24 CC
