Race Across America (RAAM) is one of the most respected and longest running ultra-endurance events in the world. RAAM is seen as a pinnacle of athletic achievement not only in cycling circles but the greater sporting community as well.
It was a superb effort from all the riders who took part in VRAAM, VRAW and the60. The cumulative distance ridden by participants was almost four times around the world!
VRAAM was especially tough and certainly lived up to the ‘The World’s Toughest Virtual Bicycle Race’ billing. The full VRAAM course was 4,542km with a total elevation gain of 73,739m but in the light of rider well-being the official race distance was reduced to 3,428km during the event. Of the 17 riders who started, 9 achieved the official race distance.
VRAW saw a large field of 83 riders attempt the 1,529km course. In the twelve day race period, 61 of the riders completed the course. Well done!
We now have the Official Results from VRAAM and VRAW and you can have look at how all the riders did by clicking on the links below.
Designed to capture the sweat and interest of real athletes in a virtual environment, VRAAM will be staged from 16-28 June 2020.
The emergence of VRAAM came as a result of the 2020 edition of the Race Across America being cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was independently created in Australia by Anthony Gordon, Sally Heginbotham and David Fell (Revolve24 Australia) for the purpose of a creative message of positivity to the global cycling community.
The message is: inspiring global awareness of the benefits of exercise in improving mental health. Research by Associate Professor Simon Rosenbaum (University of New South Wales) shows that exercising for 60 minutes a week can reduce depression by 17 per cent.
